A solid, fun fan video, with the extensive knowledge of the series you would expect, and an extension of the series that fits quite well between "Enemy Within" and "Survival". Besides, if Paul Cornell, Kate Orman, and Sylvester McCoy have said nice things about it, you really can't miss it, can you? Recommended.
I'm not a big fan of non-parody fan videos; especially when someone tries to play a "real" Doctor, not a made-up incarnation...however, this is probably the best I've ever seen.
Regulars of rec.arts.drwho know that Jon Blum is one of the most prolific and knowledgable fans of the series, and it's also not surprising that his story is very much like a New Adventure or a Season 26 story. There are a number of pleasant twists, and it felt a lot like a sequel to "Curse of Fenric" or "Battlefield". It also shares some similarity with "Set Piece", but with a slightly different twist to the fabric of time being damaged by time travel. A quality plot and script, worthy of the NAs, and I'm hopeful that Jon will get further chances to develop Doctor Who stories, and work on that BBC Books proposal that I'm sure he has...
The cast, while clearly not professionals, gave a reasonable performance; in particular "Dr. Black" and "Ray". Both "Ace" and "The Doctor" had moments where they were close to the originals; it's not a trivial task to do, and even coming close once and a while is a pretty decent task. Admittedly, it's that attempt to duplicate someone's performance that I find uncomfortable when I first sit down and watch a fan video of this time, but once you settle in, they aren't too bad...
The general production values are quite high for a fan video; the music is very professional, the few FX sequences are better than some in the original series, and while the audio drops out a couple times, the audio and visual are cetainly better than many fan videos.
Time Rift is more proof that even if Doctor Who never returns to our television, that as long as the fans want it to continue, it can...recommended.
